Team Collaboration

Digital is a "Team Sport". Every leader will tell you that collaboration is at the centre of team performance. Yet, the legacy of traditional management is to place accountability onto individuals. The attitude of having "somebody's neck on the line for the committed objective" results in much unintended consequences. For example, it is not unusual to have colleagues in competition with each other. It does not support collaboration; it actively creates dysfunction instead.

As the enterprise is investing in developing its leaders' systemic competencies through coaching, it should equally invest in stimulating the teams' systemic collaboration for the change to progress.

Client stories

An insurance company needed to reinforce the alignment and collaboration across the team offering shared DevOps services to the rest of the organisation.

A series of workshops brought the team together and helped them review their needs for collaboration. The team also redefined its engagement with other teams especially the significant programmes of the organisation, with a view to upscale the operational excellence.

Challenges to address

Changing to a model where the team develops decision-autonomy is very hard to achieve in practice. The system has optimised in a certain way, and changing the status quo requires shifting some systemic factors and take it step-by-step for it to be successful.

We help teams develop an understanding of organisation system relationships and develop ways of working with it in practice. Our programmes run as systemic coaching with the operational teams.

Multi-team Systems

Challenges to address

The principles of Agile have been established from a team level perspective. However, enterprises need to coordinate multiple-teams towards delivering outcomes of a scale, and it has challenged most Agile adoption efforts. It is the challenge of multi-team systems.

Henko's approach

The team systemic dynamics described in the above programme equally exist across the units of the broader System. The multi-team approach consists in establishing the system's fractality and intentionally working with the relationships between teams.

The classic mistake of organisation design is to focus on role boundaries. Instead, we focus on relationships and outcomes of those relationships to design the operating model for collaboration.

Our programmes cover:

  • Mapping the landscape of relationships in the System

  • Identifying the outcomes of the relationships between teams

  • Determining possible alignment improvements of the System

  • Coaching and clarifying the role of the teams in the System

  • Baselining the organisation and operating model

  • Periodically revisiting and adjusting the organisation

Services Deployed

  • Advisory review of system fractality and relationships in relation to the flow

  • Mapping of the relationships and intended outcomes

  • Coaching of the relationships across teams

  • Coaching & adapting the operating model

  • Cadence of Team Dynamics and on-going reflections

  • Decision autonomy
