Details of the curriculum: 

The Challenge:

Despite 20 years of Agile and very substantial investments in Agile/Digital transformation efforts, the field of strategy has not fundamentally changed. It is still organised by a select few, sometimes with the support of consultants, and it is then a scramble to execute.

Unless strategy can flex and adapt to what is emerging, there is no surprise that organisations are not achieving agility. To successfully realise the ambition of modernising, organisations need to reset their approach to strategy. It is just what we offer with new techniques, such as Wardley Maps, and progressing to a distributed, collaborative and emergent approach to strategy, which we call the Continous Strategy Operating Model.

Training Objectives:

  • Understand the challenge of strategy in a Digital, faster-moving landscape and how the approach to strategy needs to evolve

  • Establish the need for new techniques and position Strategy Maps (Wardley Maps) in relation to other approaches

  • Learn the steps to map and be comfortable elaborating your own maps in your business

  • Appreciate the broader concepts of the Wardley Mapping framework (Inertia, Climate, Doctrine, Gameplay, PST)

  • Beyond business strategy, applying Wardley maps for "inside-out" change strategy and for value stream design

Training Outcomes:

By completing the curriculum, participants will: 

  • Understand the need to reframe their approach to strategy and how Wardley Maps offer a modern framework to this effect

  • Be comfortable creating initial Wardley Maps and interpreting Wardley Maps

  • Have a working awareness of the base principles of movement, inertia, climate and diffusion

  • Have a view of the practical application of Wardley Maps in strategy, change, and organisation design

  • Have an awareness of the broader context of maps for follow-up masterclass training

The training is focused on: 

  • Case for change in strategy introduced through Digital challenges and need for agility

  • Introduction to the Wardley Map Strategy Cycle

  • Doing your first maps

  • Practice, practice, practice

  • Movement, climate, inertia, diffusion

  • Application in change strategy and value stream alignment

  • Overview of the broader framework (Doctrine, Gameplay, PST) - follow on masterclasses

  • Overview of going from strategy to deployment - follow on masterclasses

The training is an initial stage of learning, and it can be complemented with deep-dive masterclasses and workshops to design your own strategy. We also offer a unique Continuous Strategy facilitation, which brings Wardley Maps and Deployment into a joined-up operating model for strategy. 

Training Approach:

The best way to learn mapping is through practice, and the training maximises the breakouts (whether in person or virtual) for people to go over the hurdle of putting together their first maps.

In the cohort format, we also encourage practice outside the training sessions and discuss the practical challenges in mentoring.

Cohort format

The cohort format includes six half-day training sessions and three to six associated 1-hour mentoring calls on alternate schedules to the training sessions. 

All the sessions are virtual on Zoom and make use of Miro boards. 

We can arrange one-to-one mentoring/advisory sessions in parallel with the training for the participants who need to elaborate a sophisticated strategy using Wardley Maps.

Accelerated format: It is also possible to run this training in an accelerated format over two to three days - ideally in person (or another accelerated schedule suited to virtual learning). 

Given the importance of implementing the learnings, we strongly recommend running an associated one-to-one Mentoring/Coaching or Group Mastermind post-training if this option is preferred.
